Resident running on platform of public safety, ensuring employment opportunities, and accessibility
Labor-endorsed Renee Van Nett officially filed to be on the ballot for the 4th District City Council today. A member of the Leech Lake band of Chippewa Ojibway, Renee works as an Employment Navigator at Community Action Duluth and serves on the Duluth Citizen Review Board, as well as on the board of the Damiano Center and the Lincoln Park Children’s and Family Collaborative.
“I’m driven by the seven core values of the Anishinaabe: Humility, Truth, Courage, Honesty, Respect, Love, and Wisdom. I will be a strong voice for the district on the City Council to bridge the divides in our community,” said Van Nett. “As your City Councilor, I will make sure that no matter where you live in the 4th district that you can feel safe and take pride in where you call home. We have families that don’t feel safe in their neighborhoods and with a lack of good employment opportunities, many feel stuck in cycles of poverty.”
Renee notes that there are a lot of diverse issues in the district. There has been some wonderful new business investment in the Craft District but there is still much to do to help families in the neighborhoods thrive and prosper. She notes that there isn’t an accessible grocery store for many in the district.
Lincoln Park resident and business owner Tom Hanson stated, “Until we commit to change and bring everyone to the table we will not know the true leadership of our community. Renee Van Nett is someone working to represent this neighborhood in a way we have not had before. Leaders step in and do the hard work. Public office requires a person working to improve every residents’ representation. Renee knows her neighbors both on the street and in business. I believe Renee will inspire others to rise up and do more to become involved and improve our district. I both work and live in Lincoln Park and I am confident Renee will work every day to make a positive impact in her role as our next city councilor.”
Renee Van Nett is proud to have the endorsements from Outfront MN and the hard working members of AFSCME Council 5; the Duluth Fire Fighters Local 101; and the Duluth Central Labor Body, AFL-CIO.
